Society for Folk Music Tradition in the Slovenian Ethnic Sphere
An initiative group comprised of Nenad Firšt, Drago Kunej and
Roman Ravnič, publicly promoted in Celje on 1st December 1995 an idea of establishing
a society bearing a working name of Folk Slovenia which was to bring together
active groups and individuals - folk singers and fiddlers, interpreters of
Slovenian folk music and others engaged in conserving, studying, teaching or
popularizing Slovenian folk music heritage. Presented at the meeting were also
the basic guidelines of the Society's future activities which in the subseqent
Statute were shaped into its actual goals, namely: association of vocal-fiddling
groups and individuals, care for their qualitative and quantitative growth,
assertion and exploitation of folklore sources, of the latter's material and
musical instruments in the performing practice, education and formation of
new generations of members and listeners through counselling, organization
of courses, workshops, lectures and promotions, by collecting acoustic and
other material, exchanging opinions and by cultivating a mature, responsible
and sincere attitude to folklore heritage, folk song and music in particular.
The Society functions as an organization in culture and for the purpose of
culture, participates in and organizes festivals and other events. It maintains
contact and collaborates with similar societies, organizations and institutions
at home and abroad. On the very occasion of the founding convention in Piran
in June 1996, the Society started putting its plans into practice; it organized
a much publicized concert of folk fiddlers and performers of folk music from
Slovenia and the neighbouring countries. The event was quite a success; it
has meanwhile developed into an already traditional meeting of the Society
members - fiddlers and singers appearing either as soloists or together with
similar native or foreign groups at a public concert organized on a yearly
basis.
Special attention has been dedicated to the organization of discussions, lectures
and workshops on folk music. A series of discussions on folk music held by
the Society and external collaborators were intended to spotlight different
views on folk music, learn about its present andPast, about the ways of its
being interpreted and presented on stage, and to call attention to the copyrights
of folk music performers. Well received were also instrumental and vocal workshops
organized by the Society for the benefit of both its members and the general
public.
Soon after being established, the Folk Slovenia put into life its ambition
for a uniform and complex presentation of the Society to the public. We initially
decided on written promotional material that was to be subsequently supported
by an acoustic supplement - a musical presentation of those Society members
that perform and interpret folk music. Furthermore, our musical activities
were to be documented and displayed in a more complex manner - on acoustic
carriers - which led to an idea of a series of acoustic publications to illustrate
the activities, development and changes in our Society as a whole and of its
members as individuals.
What we have before us is our first joint acoustic publication. It is comprised
of shorter presentations of groups and soloists, i.e. Society members who prepared
and recorded, and some even published, their contributions even before the
foundation of the Society. Some members are being introduced anew, under a
different angle than in the past. The present publication is in fact a sure
sign of a lively and successful initial period of the Society, resulting from
joint efforts of all members on a voluntary basis, as well as our amateur meetings
and collaboration - all of which being sheer enjoyment and need at the same
time.
