Modern Folk Music in Slovenia II

Preface

The interpreters and researchers of the Slovene folk music tradition, joined in the cultural association Folk Slovenija with the headquarters in Ljubljana, have prepared their second music CD, which represents a selection of recordings recorded at three annual concerts (2nd concert in the Slovene ethnographic museum in 1997, 3rd concert in Portorož at the EBU meeting in 1998 and 4th concert at the music festival in Izola in 1999). All musicians involved in this project otherwise work independently and we gain our inspiration from various sources of the folk tradition across Slovenia.

Some musicians are loyal to the characteristics of their region of origin (such as for example Kurja koža from Styria, La Zonta from Northern Istria, Marko band from Prekmurje and on this record also Tomaž Podobnikar from Carniola and Ljoba Jenče from the Notranjska region), while other musicians draw inspiration also from other parts of Slovenia such as Tolovaj Mataj who gain their inspiration from Rezija, Istria, Carniola and Bela Krajina and the female vocal group Katice who are inspired by folk music from Rezija and Porabje.

We are once more trying to introduce the variety of Slovene folk music (instruments, melodies, songs and interpretations) into the media space, for we found that this variety was overlooked or even suppressed in the previous decades due to the simplification or lack of attention.

During the last two years we have also started paying attention to teaching folk singing with the emphasis on preserving the local characteristics (i.e. Istria, Bloke, Dolenjska region, etc.) with the help of folk singers, for only thus can we obtain and pass on the voice of the live folk singing merely by singing by ear, which was carried from the past into the present. A novelty can also be found in dance house workshops, where we play old melodies and where mentors show the participants old fashioned dances, so that these dances can once more become a live experience for the beginners as well as for connoisseurs.

The members of the association are regularly involved into the pedagogic process of obligatory education where we (through live performances and participation in text books) pass on the tradition of Slovene folk music onto the children.

Join us in our song and dance!
